In a world where masks are required, prompting acts of desperation, it was only a matter of time before it came to this: On the evening of January 1, in the city of Godoy Cruz in the western Argentine province of Mendoza, a young woman, for reasons unknown, entered an ice cream parlor where she was apparently instructed to put on a mask, and without a mask on her, stripped off her dress, leaving her in her bra and underwear as an entranced father who was already in the parlor with what looked like his three adolescent daughters tried his darndest to pretend he was not interested.
“In the CCTV footage, a father and his three daughters are seen approaching the counter to place their order as the woman enters the parlour, apparently in her undies,” The Daily Mail reported, adding, “However, the half-naked woman is told to put on a mask while she tries to tie her black dress around her head. The woman apparently protests as the father decides to lift his mask over his nose to avoid being told off as well. She then gives up trying to tie the dress and leaves the store after being refused service.”
According to Cronica, the woman was accompanied by 10 other people, none of whom had a face mask; she allegedly told the staff at the parlor, “Don’t ask for my face mask, I’m putting it on.” Cronica added that the group purchased 11 ice creams after someone found a mask.
According to the British government, “In all parts of Argentina you must cover your nose and mouth with a face mask or other garment in shared spaces, both indoors and outdoors. You may only remove your face mask outside as long as you keep a 2-meter distance between yourself and other people. Each jurisdiction/province might have different approaches to this rule. Make sure to check what rules apply in your jurisdiction.”
The Buenos Aires Times reported in September:
At least three regional governments in Argentina are not planning to immediately adhere to the Casa Rosada’s planned relaxation of coronavirus restrictions, especially those regarding the use of facemasks while outdoors, with several others contemplating similar action.
Officials from the provinces of Córdoba and Salta, as well as the Buenos Aires City government, have said in recent days that they do not support a move to remove the obligation for citizens to use face coverings while outside, considering it to be too early. A number of others – including the provinces of Río Negro, Jujuy and Mendoza – are also considering whether to follow suit.
The U.S. Embassy in Argentina adds on its website:
The Department of State has issued a Level 3 (“Reconsider Travel”) advisory for Argentina for U.S. citizens due to COVID-19. The Argentine Government announced that effective November 1, 2021, foreign tourists are permitted to enter, but must be fully vaccinated against COVID-19 at least 14 days before their arrival in Argentina. Please see “Entry and Exit Requirements” below for further details and continue to monitor this website for additional updates. If you have not yet done so, be sure to register at step.state.gov for emergency updates.
The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has issued a Level 3 (High Level of COVID-19) Notice for Argentina.
